Agar Ag18 (4.5mm Film, with Plasticizer)

Ingredients:

  • Water (75 mL).

  • Agar agar powder (3 g).

  • Glycerol (4 g).

Procedure:

  • Add all ingredients into a 500 mL autoclave bottle and shake thoroughly with lid closed.

  • Loosely open lid.

  • Microwave for 20 seconds on high with the goal of boiling the agar solution.

  • Take out of microwave and close lid.

  • Shake for one minute to dissolve.

  • Repeat last 4 steps 4 more times.

  • Once repeated 4 more times, cast into a mold (I used a 11.5 X 16.5 cm silicone mat).

Properties:

  • Before drying: bubbles on the surface and sort of looks liked diluted pee.

  • After drying: strong, smooth, and a less concerning color.

Notes:

  • Keep a good eye on the bioplastic while microwaving because it will boil over. When it boils over, stop the microwave and wait for a few seconds for it to calm down before continuing the microwaving.

  • A 125 mL bottle will boil over almost immediately. Trust me!

  • Because of the bubbles produced in the microwaving process, there were bubbles in my bioplastic. Besides that, the bioplastic is very smooth and has no imperfections.

  • This is the absolute best bioplastic yet by a land slide! Super smooth and consistent. It looks and feels like vinyl. Furthermore, it is very close to being fully transparent. I can't wait to modify this recipe!
